Do you insulate hot or cold pipes? That is the question.

Well, the answer is both. Pipe Insulation is imperative for insulating any exposed pipework for both your cold and hot water supplies. 

In harsh cold-winter climates, water supply pipes exposed to, say, an exterior wall or an unheated space are at a higher risk of freezing. This can then lead to frozen pipes or even burst pipes that then flood your home or premises.

By installing pipe insulation to your hot water pipes, it will ultimately save you money on your energy costs by reducing the amount of heat that is lost from the hot water pipes. So for example, if you insulate the hot water pipes leading out of your boiler, you will reduce any heat loss and reduce the cost of heating the water in the 1st run. Don’t forget that hot water pipes can also freeze quickly unless the water is actively running through them.

If you want to prevent frozen pipes, then you need to locate the pipes that are running in unheated spaces or come from the ground –  they can also run alongside outside walls, they can be in garages and lofts, basically, anywhere that is unheated.  

You can also eliminate your pipes from sweating and creating humidity by insulating them too. You see when exposed cold pipes are in contact with warm, humid air, condensation forms, and this can then cause all sorts of hazardous issues.  

If you want to reduce your water heating costs, then pipe insulation is required. 

It’s wise to insulate hot water pipes wherever you have access to them, as this will help prevent heat from radiating from the hot water pipes. By doing this, you may even consider lowering the temperature setting on your water heater.
